Extraordinary news for over 777 thousand pensioners and thousands of people with disabilities throughout Albania. The Albanian government has approved this week the decision to grant a new financial bonus called the "War Bonus", which will be financed entirely from additional revenues collected from oil taxes.
During a meeting held this morning at the Palace of Congresses with representatives of pensioners' associations, Prime Minister Edi Rama confirmed that the distribution of the bonus of 5,000 Lekës for each pensioner officially starts today, July 5, 2026.
"Oil revenues go directly to you"
In his speech, Rama emphasized that this bonus has nothing to do with electoral campaigns, but is a kept promise of the government. "You remember that last year they said they were giving the bonus for the campaign. This year we have no campaign. The bonus has nothing to do with anything else, except for the attention we promised you," the Prime Minister said to those present.
He explained the financial mechanism behind this decision. According to Rama, all the additional profits that have come to the state budget from the increase in oil prices in international markets, as a result of the war in Iran, have not been kept in the state treasury. "The profits from the oil price revenue have been added to the budget, it has not been kept in the budget, but it is part of the bonus that pensioners will receive as of today. All the income that came from the increase in oil prices from the war, you will receive," he declared, causing applause in the hall.
Support measure expands: Assistance for people with disabilities is doubled
The new social package does not stop only at pensioners. The Prime Minister announced that the most needy categories of society will also be beneficiaries. "It is not only pensioners, but also people with disabilities, who have long been waiting for what we did, the doubling of assistance for people with disabilities," Rama added.
The decision foresees that the doubling of financial assistance for people with disabilities and children with special needs will come into effect immediately. This has been one of the main demands of associations that protect the rights of this category for years.
The state takes over the insurance of caregivers
Another important innovation announced by the Prime Minister is the state's taking over the payment of social security for all caregivers of people with disabilities. "It has been decided that the insurance of caregivers of people with disabilities will be paid by the state," Rama confirmed.
This measure is expected to significantly ease the financial burden for thousands of Albanian families who take care of their members with special needs, by providing caregivers with a recognized year of work and contributions for the future pension.
How will the bonus be distributed
According to clarifications from the Ministry of Finance, the bonus of 5,000 Lek will be distributed automatically to all pensioners, without the need for application. The payment will be transferred to the bank accounts where pensioners receive their monthly pension, or will be withdrawn at the Albanian Post together with the next pension.
The process has started today and is expected to be completed for all beneficiaries by July 15, 2026. Citizens are advised to check their bank accounts or appear at post offices after this date.

The National Association of Pensioners has described the decision as "an important and necessary step in the context of the increasing cost of living". Meanwhile, opposition representatives have called for greater transparency on the method of calculating oil tax revenues and their distribution.
This bonus comes at a key moment, just before the peak of the summer season, and aims to increase the purchasing power of the most vulnerable segments of the population. The government has promised that monitoring the effects of this measure will be continuous to assess the possibility of its repetition in the future, depending on the performance of oil prices in international markets!
